     Jane was born on December the 16th of 1775 at the Steventon Rectory. Her father was a clergyman who also welcomed several young boys in his home to prepare them for college. She lived a relatively happy childhood surrounded by her  6 brothers and  her sister Cassandra.

   

     She was sent to study in a girl' s school at Oxford and then in Readings..Her family, above all  her father always recognized her talent in writing ( they had a goob library) and supported  her when she set to be published.

  

     At the death of her father in 1805, she had to move a lot because she was dependent of the good will of her brothers.  Nonetheless, she still  succeeded in writing  her major novels which were all published  in less than a decade ( from 1811 to 1818).

​

    She died the 18th of July 1816 , aged  42.

 

Among the cities where she lived , we can note:

​

  • Bath ( 1798 to 1804)

  • Southampton ( july to october 1806)

  • Chawton ( 1808 to 1813 then from 1815 to 1816)

  • London ( 1813 to 1816)

  • Winchester ( 1816 to her death)

Influence of Jane Austen's travels on her books

In order to know if we could find similitudes between the cities where she lived and the cities where she had her characters live and travel, we use the text-analysis tool Voyant.

The results were very clear: in her books, there is at least one city where she lived ( mostly London or Bath).
